Twessenger: Status Update…

@ October 5, 2008

So I’ve been receiving quite a bit of mail lately, asking whether Twessenger works with the latest Windows Live Messenger 2009 Beta. The short answer, unfortunately, is – no, it doesn’t.

The latest Messenger beta build introduced a number of major changes, including what appears to be the removal of the “Shared Folders” feature and the official “add-ins” API. As you might imagine, Twessenger relied on this API in order to hook into the application.

I haven’t had the time to dig deeper to figure out if there’s anything I can do to work around this, but the odds of a fix coming anytime soon, if ever, are very low at this point. I’m going to steer away from attempting to use undocumented and unofficial methods because they’re bound to break with any future Messenger updates, and I really don’t have the time to provide support and write patches.

I’m sorry if this answer is a let-down for you. I hope that someone out there can provide a working solution that you can migrate over to soon. Thanks for all the feedback and kind words that many of you sent in during Twessenger’s lifetime. It was fun while it lasted. :)

Do you know if the API removal is an intentional change or just one they've put in place temporarily during the beta process. From their point of view if they turn off plugins in the beta they should get less reports of issues which are not under their control.
  • Geoff, that's a good point. I think the removal of the add-ins API was intentional though. Even in previous versions of Messenger, the add-ins feature was disabled by default, and to enable it, you had to set a value in a registry key (which the Twessenger installer automatically did). So I'm not sure if they ever actually wanted it to be used.

It would be nice if they added it back in after the beta ends, but I'm not keeping my hopes up. :)
  • That is really a pity.
I haven't been using Twessenger for much long and only today I got the Beta...

Well, it is a pity that creativity has been cut like this, mainly because I loved your app...

Anyway, I keep track you in case you have the chance to come up with a solution for that.

    *cheers*

Ahh dammit. I just saw this app and thought it was a great idea. Too bad I just upgraded to the Messenger 2009 beta as well. :(

    Hi!
On this link: http://www.msgpluslive.nl/scripts/search/?q=twi... you can download some scripts written for the Addon for Live Messenger called Live Messenger Plus!. Great app.
These 3 scripts can update your Twitter status, but do not display your Twitter status in your Personal Message.
Come on Kunal, maybe it's just a script .....

    Goodluck!

Maybe you could write it for Messenger Plus (http://www.msgplus.net/)? That would be awesome! I really need this!
  • I agree with Andreas. I don't know much about programming but there's ways to write scripts for messenger plus :)
  • @Andreas @Nathalie just tested this Messenger Plus! script. works as advertised. http://www.msgpluslive.net/scripts/view/520-Twi... remember to edit the source file: options > plus > preferences/options > general > main > scripts > edit.
  • Hey Kunal, James Senior here (Social Web Evangelist) hit me a mail and let's find a way for us to get it working for the latest version of Messenger.

    Hi,

I too was using a modified version of twessenger, and upgraded.

I then switched to this tool

    http://mynewbiz.blogspot.com/2009/06/windows-li...

It is a simple comand line tool to update yoru Personal Status message, you can then use whatever scripts you want to set your message.

    Hope this helps!
